Captioned Telephones for People with Hearing Loss

New products and new technology make life easier and more exciting for people who have some degree of hearing loss. Individuals who are hard of hearing now have a way of communicating on the phone with their hearing counterparts. The new captioned phone works like any other traditional phone with one important difference: It shows you every word the other party says throughout the conversation. The hard of hearing party simply places a call, and receives what the other end of the line is saying via text captions. Hearing problem users can listen to the caller, and can also read written captions during the call. Speak directly to anyone over the phone, and read their response via text captions word for word.

The start using your captioned phone you need to assign your preferred phone line to a toll free number that will be provided upon registration. When your friends and family call your toll-free, the phone line you registered will ring.

You can choose any of the following to make a call:

  • Phone Caption – TEXT – This will allow you to view captioned text while you speak on the phone. If you are using an IP phone (i.e. Cisco 7960), you can read the transcribed text directly on your IP phone screen.
  • If you need to contact a 911 emergency service, we urge you to dial 911 directly. You can still use our service to contact emergency services; make sure your profile information is up to date.

You can dial the other person’s number, exactly the same way as with any other telephone. While you dial, the Captioned telephone automatically connects to the captioning service. When the other party answers, you hear everything they say, just like a traditional call. At the same time, the captioning service transcribes everything they say into captions, which appear on the display window. You hear what you can, and read what you need to.
