New Hearing Aid Assistance Tax Credit Act

Apr 14, 2011 by

The Hearing Aid Assistance Tax Credit Act (H.R. 1479) was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation provides a tax credit of up to $500 towards the purchase of a hearing aid, available once every five years. The tax credit would be available to those individuals age 55 years and older, dependents of taxpayers, or taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is below $200,000.

This legislation would be a positive first step towards improving access to hearing aid technology.  Research studies have shown that the use of hearing aids by individuals with hearing impairments improves quality of life and reduces societal costs of caring for those with hearing loss problems.  There is little or no private health insurance including Medicare coverage for hearing aids and the audiology services needed to assess, fit, and monitor the use of these hearing aid devices.  Lack of payment assistance for hearing aids is a large factor of why people with hearing problems are not buying and using hearing aids. While this proposed tax credit may not completely solve the problem of under-utilization of hearing aids, we believe it is an excellent start that will make hearing aids more affordable to people with hearing loss problems. We hope the hearing health community can provide additional coverage options for hearing aids.
